Review Comment:
   I'd say we should try to avoid changing current behavior and aim to only add 
the custom listeners on top of what the current behavior is. We can evaluate 
whether we should change the actual handling of the events (and possibly how 
the listeners are called when they are tied together) in a separate issue/pr
