Why is relaxation so important? Because it helps you manage stress and live an overall better life. Not only is relaxation fun and easy, but it helps us live a healthier life. We can all add relaxation techniques into our life, so I encourage you to do so!
Relaxation techniques can help you manage stress by helping you better cope with a stressful situation. You know when you get worked up about something and your heart rate goes up? Relaxing techniques can help bring your heart rate back down. They can also help you to slow the rate at which you are breathing. Many people become short of breath when they are faced with a stressful situation. This is because their body is reacting physically and needs more oxygen. People also tend to tighten their muscles when angry or put into a stressful situation. Relaxation techniques can help reduce the need for oxygen and can help relax your muscles. Not only is stress management a benefit of relaxation, but so is a healthier lifestyle. Relaxation techniques lead to having a better overall ability to handle difficult situations. This can be helpful in controlling emotional responses to stressful situations. If your first response is anger or disappointment, relaxation techniques will help you change your way of thinking and change negative emotions into positive ones. Relaxation can also improve your physical body when dealing with stress. Stress can oftentimes cause headaches and pain in the neck, shoulders, and back. Relaxing can help ease pain and help you deal with the stress easily. Stress can cause a lot of worrying and it can also take up a lot of your time. By replacing negative feelings when stressed, you will actually feel more energy in your day to day activities. As a hypnotherapist, I am a big fan of using visualization as a relaxation technique. In hypnosis sessions, I take clients on a visual journey called an induction that helps relax them. Basically, I tell a very long, detailed, and relaxing story about something that puts them at ease. I have them imagine being at the beach and I describe their surroundings as they relax. Another relaxation technique includes breathing exercises. It's not a secret that women using breathing techniques while giving birth. There is a reason for that. Taking deep breaths in and out calms and relaxes you. Also, focusing on your breathing allows you to take focus away from the negative. A great relaxation technique to use is muscle relaxation. I also use this technique with clients. I have them start with their head and then they slowly work all the way to their toes. I point out each major muscle group and have them focus on each one and relax while doing so. As you can see, there are many great benefits of dealing with stress in positive ways, especially with relaxation techniques. I encourage you to try them out and see how your life improves!
