We had a party up in Palo Alto after M38 was discovered.
Dr. Knuth showed up late, devoured an enorrrrmous
chimichanga with the enthusiasm of one who had been
fasting for days, regaled us briefly with an account
of a search algorithm he had been working on, then
paid his bill and left before anyone could take it
from him. Last in, first out. Only with great difficulty did I restrain myself from falling
prostrate before the man and wailing: I'm unworthy!
I suck!
I remember that :) I was awestruck also, I read and reread TAoCP in the late early 80s.
