Folks,
Just to add some info .. I've been trying to be very careful with my Dell
laptop on Prime95, Boinc, Seti classic, [EMAIL PROTECTED] <mailto:[EMAIL
PROTECTED]>
etc over the last 18 months or so. Prime95 is definietly the heaviest load,
as well described in the GIMPS web pages.
I've been using the Throttle param, set at between 20 and 40ms, to keep
system load at 88-90% and the cpu temp at about 65-70 which my fairly
extensive reading (ok, Googling) tells me is quite safe.
There's an excellent fan and temperature control tool at
http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/index.html
<http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/index.html> which I find quite reliable. You
can set it to cut in your fans at top speed at about say 73 C which rapidly
cools the CPU to say 67 C where you can cut back to low fan speed.
Also, I have a USB add-on fan - on a flexible rod about 18 inches long. You
can angle it to point at the laptop's fan intake and it augments the cooling
very well, keeps the CPU temp own to about 60 when it would normally be 70.
It's a bit circular to use the laptop to drive a fan to cool itself - like
having a fan on the deck of a sailing dinghy to drive it along - but it
works fine.
Except the cheapie USB fan is giving out I think, it's starting to make some
noise and the casing is getting hot. I guess it wasn't designed to run 24/7
!
