Bob Margulies writes: A few hours ago, Prime95 version 23.8.1 reported M32091881 is not prime and appears to have gone directly to LL testing of M27471827 without doing any factoring. Is that OK? Usually factoring takes at least a day.
It is likely fine, probably due to someone doing only factoring work (like at least two of my PCs). It has no known factor: M( 27471827 )U: 576460790500150601 ... and it has some P-1 work: M( 27471827 )o: 330000 8580000 This exponent is large enough that this info is not on my web site (given below) due to disk space limits, but new data relevant to GIMPS is forwarded to George Woltman automaticly once a week. On the other hand, this exponent, like 2,934,307 others, has "gaps" in the trial factoring data: M( 27471827 )J: 12443200009 5401400737433 M( 27471827 )G: 5401400737433 2251796050044945 M( 27471827 )J: 2251796050044945 2257197171599545 M( 27471827 )G: 2257197171599545 18014394745841681 M( 27471827 )J: 18014394745841681 18014563304727449 M( 27471827 )G: 18014563304727449 72057590274287633 M( 27471827 )J: 72057590274287633 72057632410563247 M( 27471827 )G: 72057632410563247 144115184312215569 M( 27471827 )J: 144115184312215569 144115226305625039 M( 27471827 )G: 144115226305625039 288230372388071441 M( 27471827 )J: 288230372388071441 288230414480354201 M( 27471827 )G: 288230414480354201 576460748539783185 M( 27471827 )J: 576460748539783185 576460790500150601 The G lines represent these gaps. Gaps have several causes, including bugs in older software and the fact that Prime95 stops looking for factors after finding one since it does not check possible factors in numeric order. The J lines represent "joins": results of trial factoring that "cover" gaps. Since I'm the only person that cares about this "gaps" data (so far as I'm aware), I'm also the only person working on closing the gaps. Also, the file containing the gaps and joins data is presently about 1.3 GB, far too large for my web site and far too time consuming to upload. See: http://www.garlic.com/~wedgingt/mersfmt.txt ... for the description of this format and: http://www.garlic.com/~wedgingt/mersenne.html ... for other info related to Mersenne numbers.
