What machine is this on? Your program with gcc -O3 on my Core Duo 1.2GHz (with List_max changed to ten million) it ran for more than five minutes before I got tired and killed it off. For comparison, a hastily coded version of the sieve of Eratosthenes finished in half a CPU second.
