It can, I believe, currently use both 'Solaris Print System' or CUPS. 
But it can only one of them at any given time. To switch it over you 
have to disable one and enable the other.

The PPD files come from various places; foomatics, hpijs (hplip) and 
gimp-print (and maybe others). gimp-print is currently being updated to 
gutenprint but I don't know when that will be integrated.
