Recently I decided to switch to the mac as my primary desktop
platform, having used it on my laptop more or less contentedly for
months prior. I'm now looking to delve back into music creation.
Linux, my platform of choice before switching, was very lacking on
this regard, and the fact that I had to reboot to windows to
accomplish anything useful was a major turn-off to me.

Here are my needs. I'm looking for a multi-track audio recorder. I'd
like one that has some concept of tempo, time signatures, etc. as
calculating offsets/times manually isn't something I want to do. I
need a MIDI sequencer of some sort, one that will let me drive
external MIDI equipment. I'm under OS X, so OS 9 solutions aren't
good for me at all. Also, while I could afford to buy more
professional solutions, I am just an amateur and am budgetting
accordingly.

I've played with Garage Band, and agree with past list posts here
that it has potential. Has anyone here used it for projects of their
own, and if so, can you offer tips? I've also heard about an iControl
surface designed specifically for GB. Has anyone experimented with
this, and how well does it work as far as making it more accessible?

Failing that, are there any accessible packages that meet the
specifications above? I plan on swinging by VersionTracker in the
next day or two and just grabbing/evaluating as much as I can, but I
thought I'd ask here first. (Aside: a MacVisionaries Wiki for listing
accessible software packages, tips in using them, etc. might prove
invaluable.)

Thanks.
