Hi Thomas, i use photoshop for his kinda thing. Start the action before you open the file, and proceed as usual. Once you've finished what you want to be in the action, save then close the file (as psd, tiff etc) then stop the action.
you can then (via automate, batch) do a batch job on a folder with that action, making sure that you have the override action open and override action save as boxes checked.
