Good to have you on board ProDIG with your head above the parapet, I was unaware of the shortfall in Firewire compliance on some PCs, so that info is very useful.
When we spoke last, you had not asked me about a book on OS X, so rather than just reply privately, I am replying to the List as others may well be interested - there is a small book entitled 'Unix for Mac OS X' put out by O'Reilly. It has been endorsed by the Apple Developer Connection as a recommended title. It seems very straightforward - so far; I have just started reading it. There are more general titles, but they cover only the mainly Mac specifics rather than some of the underpinnings, which I reckon might prove more powerful and give a better understanding of where the operating system is going.
PC World have many more titles now than a month or so back; several purporting to cover 10.2 (aka 'Jaguar')
Hope that might help.
