I am shooting a series of black and white ads and was proposing to shoot
colour negs, having them scanned for retouching before converting to B&W

Dear Chris,

I am no expert but, I suppose you have option of colour and B&w if you
shot colour. Obviosly there is something different about the grain
pattern of B&w film to colour, so if your after a certain feel I would
go with B&W as the flextight will pick up all the nuiances of the film.

If that is not the answer then shoot colour neg (you could use the tmax
kodak c41 film as well, at least it gives some security with exposures).
Scan in colour and keep the data and use the channel mixer in to
monochrome so giving you control over highlight, shadow and midtone
details.

Keep as rgb fro maximum tonal range.

Hope that helps

cheers
