Hello Michael,
Whilst I'm loath to recommend as I'm not knowledgeable enough I'm happy to tell you
that I'm using Western Digital special edition Drives with 8 mb cache buffers
purchased from www.afterhours.co.uk (great service)
and the cheapo Caddies with built in fans from www.scan.co.uk when they were on
their for today only offer.
just checking the WD site I see they are doing 200 GB External Firewire Drives which
sound an even simpler solution although probably at higher cost
Sony are doing double data rate CDR and CDRWs now with 1.3 GB per disk,of course
your Cd writer has to be capable of using the disks(He writes with a smug grin having
purchased a Sony rewriter by accident)

I Hope this is of some use to You.
Regards
