Darrin, One trick I use is to steam a piece of cloth small enough to be hidden behind or beneath whatever you are going to photograph. For example a under a plate or behind a cup. That normally gives you steam for a few minutes and you can always have another piece of cloth in the steamer while the one you use goes cold...
