I'm not sure if it's possible, depends how the archives are stored and
dished out, but probably the simplest thing to do is to prevent the bots
from gathering and indexing the archives.

If the archives are in HTML and residing on the list's server, I'm pretty
sure you can put a text file in there to prevent search engines gathering
the archives for indexing. I do it with some of my pages. I use a meta tag
but a text file can be used. That way, they will be available only to the
members.

The meta tag I use is: <META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW">

I've just taken all my email addresses off my websites (probably a case of
closing the gate after the horse has lost the Derby but...) and put up a
form instead for contacting. The form pops up in a window but the page has
the above tag so that the bots can't get at the address.
