Not necessarily: although it's easier to make quality fixed focals than
quality zooms it's easier still to make crap fixed focals.  Some pro zooms
beat their fixed siblings of the same length, others don't.  There's
expertise available on the net and even more opinion.

Don't know what your preferred brand is but http://www.nikonlinks.com/ is
one source, http://kenrockwell.com/nikon/index.htm is another.

You can't just rely on the leading brand names though, unless they're
German, as all the top Japanese houses have made & sold crap in their time.
