Hello All, Thanks to all your assistance, the problem (for the moment) is solved. The Mac is safe, the window is unbroken by flying Macs, and all is right in the world.
The Memory problem was sorted by reducing the amount of memory allocated to Flexcolor, leaving adequate memory for the OS. The freezing up of the scratchpad, which followed the drastic measures I took to clean up the machine, must have been due to the fact that I inadvertently deleted the scratchpad folder! Per (sp?) in Imacon USA sorted that out for me. I just had to delete once again, ALL the preferences related to Flexcolor, and it rebuilt when I restarted. Photographs taken, many thanks to all replies.
