Thanks to everyone who has offered and given help.

Now the bad news. I went into the unit and bought the old G4 back home which
is how I was able to communicate on the internet yesterday. The new one is
still dead. This morning I decided that the fault must have been hardware
related through the lead to the hard disk. I was really looking forward to
seeing what the 2100 printer would do. plugged it into the old and still
working machine, with firewire this time, and the same thing happened again!
I have now messed up two machines.

After swearing at two dead machines all day I decided to try one last go at
reinstalling on the machine that went down this morning. It worked!

So the conclusion is that something is wrong with Epson 2100 software on my
setup.

I will now try connecting the two machines together as suggested by Jay. If
Paul in St Austell wants to look west there just may be a big bang!

Thanks

Bob Croxford

PS You might ask how I got into a mess without some essential work on an
external drive? Well OS X has a font called Dingbats which is different to a
font which I used also called Dingbats. To enable me to access the font I
wanted I had to work in 9.2. To enable me to repeatedly open a Quark file and
make multiple changes I moved it onto the desktop. What seems a simple
solution ended up making a big problem even bigger.

I suggest that you start thinking also in another, second internal HD for
your machine, since this is the only safe way to be able to always boot it
and be able to make repairs when damage arises. >>
