A very similar thing happened to a guy I was assisting at the end of the
year. His problem was that he'd taken the camera to Nikon to get the chip
cleaned & while doing so they'd also updated the firmware in the camera as a
matter of course. Unfortunately he wasn't told that this would mean that he
couldn't transfer raw files using the present versions of his nikon
capture/nikon view software - ensuing in lots of horrible green casts,
corruption & a fair bit of panicking. In the end it turned out the solution
was to download software updates from the nikon website. Simple enough, but
all seemed a bit unnecessarily time consuming considering he hadn't asked
for the new firmware in the first place...

Don't know if you've had the D1x firmware updated recently, but if you have
I reckon this is the source of your problem...
