I tried the free demo of the ImagePrint RIP. It has a function that would automate this process somewhat. It's particularly useful with a large format printer but could probably be helpful with small images on a desktop printer as well. Essentially you drop images into a folder and ImagePrint automatically assembles them in the most efficient way for whatever page size you define. The images could be coming from multiple workstations on a network if you have several people prepping images. It rotates them if needed to efficiently fill the space on a page. When the page reaches a certain percentage filled (you define this in preferences) it then sends the page to the printer and starts building the next with any new images that come into the folder. It can even be configured to email you when a page has been sent to the printer and when its complete. Again, probably overkill for a small printer, but very useful with a wide format inkjet in a production environment.
