Hi Neil, The USB cable does go straight to the computer as does the firewire cable (even downloaded the latest Epson drivers from the Australian site to overcome the glitches others have experienced with firewire and the 2100.)
It may be a conflict problem with the Intel modem (also USB) as this is occasionally not being seen by the computer. I am not sure yet. I am getting a replacement G4 (older model) on trial with my hard drive to see if that solves the problem. The trouble is it is an intermittent fault. I don't know if a power surge can cause the 2100 to switch off but the 2100 has it's own power supply and the modem doesn't. The only other solution is the latest G4 having problems with communication cables. Fortunately I bought it from a supplier who seem intent on getting to the bottom of the problem as well.
