Dear List Members, Having been an avid follower of this list since I started subscribing to it, I thought I might take this opportunity of asking for a little advice. Please feel free to reply off-list if appropriate.
I am a professional broadcast cameraman, and I work in many different areas. Last year I spent several weeks filming Oil industry facilities in Saudi, and this involved doing a lot of aerial filming from helicopters. Nothing new there (for me). The director that I worked with on that project has a similar job to do somewhere else in the middle east, and wants me to do it. Part of the brief is to do stills, which is not a problem, but I am thinking about doing it digital. I own a couple of Leicas and a 35mm and 90mm lens, which I don't believe is really up to the job (well I need more lenses). I would need to hire in some gear anyway, and would probably, as an old Nikon man, opt for an F5, but I figure that maybe the digital route is probably better since I will be doing the video stuff as well. I think that the benefits of being able to review material at the end of the day is wise, particularly given my recent experiences of film suffering from heat stress on my last job. So, if I go to Calumet, I have a choice of the Kodak 14n, Canon EOS D1, Nik D1X or D100. I suspect that the D100 would probably do, and is half the price of the 14n. But being comfortable with 35mm lenses, I suspect that the advantages of the 14n may be worthwhile, and certainly the picture quality is better (from what I can gather from reading the list). I'm not sure that I would be able to make practical use of the firewire straight into my laptop whilst working from a helio, and that would seem to be the only advantage of using the D1X over the D100. I would like some advice on which camera you guys would use... I am also interested with what happens to the images I take in terms of copyright. Usually when working on video I have NO copyright on the material which I shoot (this may surprise you). But in stills I believe the copyright of material usually resides with the photographer. In a situation such as this, would you give the one off or unlimited rights to use the photographs by the client, but still retain the copyright to other users? How does this usually work? How would you word the contract in terms of the pictures?
