Its perhaps worth noting also that the assign profile command and the
convert profile command map the new profile space in different ways. When
using the assign profile command you may see a shift in colour whereas
convert to profile will preserve the original appearance.

Thats why when opening a file which has no embedded profile its a good idea
to choose 'don't colour manage' as this will allow you to make a judgement
about the most appropriate profile to assign, and once the image looks good
on screen, then convert to your working space profile, which should not
create any further colour shift in the appearance.
