how to get a Mac to

AFAIK, easy as:

Mac->System Prefs->Sharing. Turn on Windows File Sharing

Windows (XP)->Add Network Place->\\ip_address_of_mac\username

So to access the the folders for a user 'petem' on a mac at 192.168.0.100, use

\\192.168.0.100\petem

And login with normal username and password.

As for:

And doubly glad to learn of any way for a Mac to access a shared Windows
(non-postscript) printer....

I've got Windows printing to a shared USB inkjet (Canon S750) attached to a Mac, but not the other way. Guess that's because I do most of my printing from the Mac, so it made sense to have that as the 'master'. If you want details on how to do that, let me know.
