Basically there isn't a solution. On this machine I have no problems using OSX Mail and Tesco.net but AOL was an absolute pain.
There is some kind of installation bug in some font programmes like ATM and Suitcase. Look at all the programme names associated with these and see if there is a blank space in front of the name. However I don't think causes the internet font problem.
There are some complicated instructions how to remove all the unnecessary fonts from the system and move them into a folder that only Suitcase sees. When I have a lot of time I'll try it.
