Paul, There was a thread on Prorental.com about this issue some months ago - apparently it's the achilles heel of PhaseOne backs - otherwise they're bomb proof. My solution has been to make a standard Nikon screw-locking PC lead into a very short (3cm) lead which is left screwed into the back's socket so wear from connecting flashes many times a day is one step removed from the back itself.
