how have other folk dealt with this
try iPhoto ( OS X only) and export the images as a QuickTime slideshow. Its basic with a simple fade / disolve but you can adjust the display time. The only problem I've fould is not being able to easily annotate the pics and the fact that the pics can still be copied.
