On a basic level using a mac, you can copy (apple C) the contents of a folder, then paste into a simple text document and this will list the contents of the folder rather than paste the pictures. This can also be done in Excel on the mac so you can catalogue folder contents, sort and compare and perform all the usual excel database stuff.
