Hi Steve

I have a couple of photolibrary clients that have either Nikon 8000 or 4000
scanners and have had at some point lines running across the image.
The lines are always across the scanning length (i.e. left to right on a
portrait, up and down on a landscape).

I have a theory that the travel bars the head assembly goes along eventually
get dirty and causes the scanner to stutter. I have cleaned one such
scanners rails and removed the problem, though it returned after a couple of
weeks use.

If your scanner is in warranty then do not try anything yourself, fixation
in London seems to be the place to get these problems sorted otherwise.

I had a similar problem with a Howtek 4500 drum scanner, the rubber drive
belt developed a crack causing the drum rotation to slip every so often with
the same resulting visual corruption so I wouldn't blame Nikon as such, a
solid state scanner with no moving parts would be the long term answer for
these kind of problems.
