Don't make this more complicated than it needs to be:

Download Bombich's Carbon Copy Cloner onto your iBook.
Attache an external, hopefully, FireWire drive to the iBook.
Erase and reformat the external drive.
Start Carbon Copy Cloner
It may tell you that pSynch is not installed, let it download and
install....(it won't), then let it download to your desktop, otherwise go to
the website, (google search), and download it. Install it.
Run Carbon Copy Cloner again. (should be version 2.1.6)
Make sure the <Make Bootable> is checkmarked.
Pick the Source, (your iBook drive)
Pick the Destination, (external drive)
click the padlock and enter your admin password,
click Clone
Go have lunch.
Come back, if Cloning operation is complete, shut down.
Unplug everything.
Install new drive.
Plug in the external firewire drive.
Boot computer (from the external drive.)
Format the new drive.
Name the new drive.
Start Carbon Copy Cloner.
Pick Source, (the external drive)
Pick Destination, (the new drive on the iBook)
click padlock
enter password
click Clone
go have a beer.
come back, if Cloning is complete, Shut down.
unplug external drive.
Reboot
Any questions??

I do this about 9 times a week.
