The Fuji S2 can produce 35.5 MB files straight out of the camera! It all
depends who you are trying to convince. If you are trying to convince a
picture library, you will have a battle on your hands. The newspaper
industry consumes thousands of digital pictures a day and they are don't
even shoot RAW but are heavily JPEG'd for sending over the phone/satalite
links. Do they need convincing? Nope.
The 300 dpi is a conservative figure. It gives some elbow room to the
designer to upsize (because they often have to crop heavily) without
interpolating. And they still have room for some interpolation at the RIP
stage without recourse to Photoshop or other upsizing software. And as other
have pointed out, digitally originated images interpolate better than film
originated images.
Anyway, how many images get printed A4, full bleed? Not a lot! If you look
though most magazines, I think you will find the average image is about 2-6
Mb. So if you're trying to convince a client who outputs to magazines,
there's no argument. Even a humble Canon G3 or Nikon Coolpix is overkill!
