Is the scanner visible using the apple system profiler? If it is then try a
copy of Vuescan(I think it's supported) to see if it can be accessed?

Check out termination settings and cables (try several) since osx is much
more picky about such things and often fails with a setup that's fine under
os9

If you still get stuck let me know some more details...
