Very Common, sort of.

Most modern digital cameras (35mm style & compacts) shoot in roughly an sRGB
colour space. sRGB is not tagged to the file, however PS recognises the file
as being sRGB when it opens it. (due to some kind of tagging, can't remember
the details, but its not an actual colourspace tag). This method works fine.

If you choose another type of colour space in the camera (If this option is
available to you, i.e. AdobeRGB on a Canon 10d) then you have to open the
image first, then assign it a profile, AdobeRGB.

Of course in an ideal world, you'd profile your camera, just like you do
with your monitor, scanner & printer. However in general, this is far more
trouble than it is worth, and personally I wouldn't go there.

I'm not sure that there are any cameras available that can actually embed an
ICC profile into the file. Usually this is done post capture, via software.
