When the images are being written to the card from the buffer the little green light is on at the back of the camera. The camera will also 'freeze' (i.e. you can't release the shutter) while this is going on. There is a table in the manual that give expected write time to a card for the various size files that can be stored on the card. I know that if I have shot in NEF (uncompressed) you can go and make a cup of tea while the image is writing! Hope this helps.
