Take a look at Colorthink from my friend Steve Upton at Chromix
(link on my site http://www.colourmanagement.net/profilgear.html)
This application will allow you to plot your image data - yes, the
actual image data by reference to it's colourspace, superimposed over
the colourspace of the printer or press - in 2D or, more usefully, 3D
(Lab or Yxy or Luv). You can also plot the vectors of the data as it
moves to the destination space.

And it's easy to use. Fun too.

Colorthink is an immense help when it comes to seeing which colour
areas are going to be problematic. And to undertanding waht profiles
are doing / how the spaces relate.

Of course I'd agree that softproofing, along with gamut warning, AND a
good wide gamut <proofer> (setup to accurately simulate the press) are
essential too. (remember, of course, that there may well be colours in a
file which are outside monitor gamut, that's why a proofer is so
essential, even a lowly Epson can do this job when set up right.

Colorthink can be a really good aid to visualising what's happening.
Why not take a look?
