One dirty solution is to boot in OS9 and attempt to mount the disk using
scsi probe or similar (being a mac (fickle and with an unpredictable
mind of its own - the fact of having got it to boot once could mean
that it will then work in OSX)


..I would try fsck from the prom boot monitor (pre boot)in OSX *first
though  and see if that recognizes and repairs it

There are a bunch of command line Unix utilities for mounting disks but
it requires learning too much to use those (for most of us)

Thanks for all your replies and advice. I did try the above.

I ran a copy of Diskwarrior V3 and it fixed the problem under ten minutes.
