On the G4, first try going back to the basic extensions set (Mac OS base) restarting, and turning on one of your peripherals, if the machine either recognises the device or asks you to install the software, then it's an extension conflict, I recommend conflict catcher to resolve this. If the above does not work, then change your active set of extensions back to your regular set, re-boot, then try this, an Apple tech. told me this and worked for me:-, If you can, back up anything important Unplug all your peripherals, restart with <CMD ALT O F> (without the <>) ; when you get a grey screen (open firmware), type <reset-nvram> (without the <>) press enter then type <reset-all> (without the <>) press enter, if the machine does not restart, type <shut-down> (without the <>) and re-boot in the usual way with your peripherals connected, don't be tempted to type anything else while in open firmware, it's very easy to upset the machine! You have just reset the machine's lowest level of programs back to the Apple specifications, including the cuda, p-ram and nv-ram you'll have to reset the time, date and anything else you have installed which stores information in the low levels of Mac OS. If, after all of that the bas***d thing still refuses to work, then you have a blown logic board, which can be replaced, but at great expense, or buy a PCI firewire card for about 60 (I recommend the one made by Swann, it does not need software) and you'll have fewer problems with firewire than you ever had using the built in ports....... To anyone else who may have other problems which they think the above may fix, the open firmware trick works on Blue & white G3's and the Carbon G4's running Mac os up to 9.2.x but does not work on power books except the titanium's and anything running OSX, I advise reading the forums at apple.com for fixes for those machines.
