If you do decide to put a platform on top of a vehicle, use three or four standard ladder-rack type bars, pack up the end ones to compensate for any curvature in the roof, and attach a sheet of e.g. one inch plywood. Edging would increase strength and air resistance, and make you less likely to fall off. You might consider a folding rail, to prevent you falling off and increasing edge strength.
