Hi List, Like several of you I am sure, I get many requests from students and 'new to the industry hopefuls' asking to see me if they can accompany me on location shoots; to show their portfolios or just to chat through how to get started etc. etc. The problem with this, is that one can spend an enormous amount of time with just one person, which, whilst I do not begrudge, means that only a few can ever be seen in any given time.
Having had several requests of late, I hit upon the idea of seeing several all at once. This had the added advantage of not only hearing me tell them how to market themselves and get to grips with the industry, they could feed off one another and realise that there were others in the same boat. And so last Friday I invited four students (just out of college) out to the sticks in deepest Hampshire where in a pleasant garden we all chatted about the things that concerned young people the most, in starting a career in photography. Being fed and watered, aided proceedings admirably and a good time was had by all. They came from different colleges around the country and each one said, that they had not been given any help with marketing and little instruction about running businesses, both of which I offered help by way of using the internet. Lighting was another skill that was a long way down the list on instruction. A pretty basic requirement in photography as far as I am concerned. Judging by the responses the following day, all the recipients felt the day had been worthwhile. This has now led me to think that this might be worth repeating, say two or three times a year, when I can fit it in between overseas shoots. So, if it is of interest to students who will have just left college or young image hopefuls still trying to swim in the shark infested digital solutions of the day, then I am happy to listen and chat and proffer advice based on forty years of experience in the most amazing, exciting and fabulous profession there is. I would emphasise that this idea is for those who are genuinely interested in starting a career behind the camera. This industry and profession has been very good to me, so if this can be seen as an opportunity of returning some of the benefits to others starting out, all they have to do is make contact.
