Thanks to all who replied on list about my request. It really does look like there's a good gap in that market for a top notch standard to short telephoto zoom for portrait situations. The 85/1.2 sounds like a hell of a lens but would be too restrictive for my work.
I have ordered the Tamron 28-105 f2.8 to check it out but will return it if it's no good.
