I'm starting to get more seriously into Photoshop now and as my confidence grows at a rate greater than my ability :) I'm starting to ask more of it. Never bothered with a scratch disk before, but will set one up now. Question is, how big does it need to be? I've a serviceable 2 gig that I could fit in about 10 minutes, would that be enough to serve as just a scratch disc? I'm PC based on XP Pro.
Dear Neill
If you want PhotoShop to fly do this:
Run the very fastest SCSI drives on a quality controller.
Have one drive for your OS.
Have another for your Paging file (applies to all Windows NT, 2K and XP users)
Your third drive will be your scratch drive for PhotoShop. Size depends on the size of files you are working with and if you use lots of layers....certainly allow at least 2G...we have allocated 10G at the moment.
Have a forth drive for your work in progress.
Have any old huge but reliable drive for longer term storage. (As speed is not usually a vital consideration you can save your money and buy non SCSI)
The smallest SCSI drives currently available are 18G so it makes sense to partition them and use the spare partition for long term storage. You would not want to use them as general day to day storage as that would negate buying separate drives in the first place!
You will need to ensure you have substantial cooling in your computer or you will have problems. A clutch of these drives produce quite a lot of heat! It goes without saying that you need to stuff in as much ram as you can afford or get in.....assuming you are on meaty size files.
However before you do any of this speed stuff better make sure you have a good monitor and the means to accurately calibrate and profile it....then think about speed<G>
Hope this helps.
Cheers
