I hate to dive into this when there are some experts here but a rip is the
only way to linearise the ink which is a necessary step before profiling.
The epson driver does compress the shadow detail and a rip allows you to
generate a linear response. If you use a third party ink you need to
linearise the inks so that a profile doesn't have to do too much buggering
around to bring things into true. many people are using rips to print BW
with ultrac. inks and avoiding the yellow cart to reduce metamerism. If
you use epson inks a rip allows you to linearise the inks precisely for
your system. The benefits are the same as comparing a canned profile
against a custom-made one. The epson driver is a catch-all device whereas
a rip aloows you to get the response you want for your system
