The D1X is not as good as the more expensive Canon and will be replaced by a
new version (D2X?) this year I would expect. It might be worth waiting or
getting a cheaper D100.
Nikon sw is flaky but has improved of late. The introduction of Adobe Raw
has been a godsend in terms of speed. Raw files are just 12 bit tiffs that
suffer less from tone or colour corrections than jpegs do.
My location workflow is now usually to shoot into Nikon View using capture
control on a laptop & process in Adobe Raw back at the studio.
