I said I would come back with a final installment.
I hope I am not counting my chickens, but I have used it most of today and nary a problem - no error Code 02s at all, and I have been able to press the shutter fully at all times, so my faith in Canon has been restored. I must also congratulate the supplier who exchanged it for a new one, and importantly - on the promised date. So I can now give an unqualified recommendation to Digital Depot in Old Stevenage.
