Greetings all

Neil - you were... right.!

I have been using the Pantone Spyder and ColorMouse to try and get myself
out of "profile hell" - seems that however hard I try I cannot get the exact
printer profile my 1290 needs. The equipment is straightforward, but the 729
patch which I used is fiddly, and has given me a hard time. I wasn't sure
whether one is allowed to enlarge the test patch size to A3(for ease of
measuring) so I did 729 on an A4.. not nice, when the counter on screen only
goes up to 100.. after that you can't allow yourself to be distracted by
anything or else..!

I have been forced to bin the Pantone screen calibrations and go back to the
Gretag one (which gives me the odd translucent square shape on cursor) and
out of the 16 or so printer profiles created I have finally produced a
profile which I can say IS better, but none have a large enough gamut.
Banding, posterization - still there a fraction. I thought I had it licked
but was I wrong!

I judged the profiles I made with the 'profile-pro' plug-in through the
custom proof set-up in PS7, and alternating between profiles in this mode..
seemed a good way to see if they matched the screen (then printing to check
properly), but I suspect I am not doing it the right way(?) The instructions
are there but don't specify if you can/not do that.

Teamwork, who rented the kit to me for the weekend, charged 55 plus vat.,
let me have the Color-mouse an extra day for free, due to my foot-stomping
in the shop. The sales guy swears blind that it works "just fine for
everybody else" -AHEM.. I won't be purchasing a Spyder OR Colormouse,
cheers mate.

So, I will try printing the test downloads from Neil Barstow's Pixl site and
going from there - too bad I now have to print and make excuses, I hope I
don't lose face with my clients if they pick my prints to death..

Ouch - Learnt MY lesson. Neil/Thomas! I'm on my way.

Eddy
