Hi I upgraded one of my Macs to 10.3 today and thought I'd pass this one on (and yes I do use it for photo work ;-))
Apple has quietly dropped support for a lot of older video cards if they were not original 'Apple supplied' versions. The machine in question (450M AGP G4) had a non Apple GeForce2 card and leaves smeared trails if you move windows about.
