Hi

If you can find someone with a volt meter, you could measure the voltage say
1hr, 1 day, 2 days after a full charge. A nice bit of graph paper should
show any duff cells.

That would show if any batteries were self discharging.

For lack of capacity you could put a charged set into a camera, fire off a
few dozen shots and then measure each cells voltage. If you don't have a
meter you could use a low voltage flashlamp bulb and see which battery
either does not light the bulb or dims much faster than the others.

There may be battery testers available, but as an ex-electronics designer
who still has two oscilloscopes - I couldn't buy one on principle! :-))
