George, I use D1X's in the main and also have a D100 as a back-up.
Initally, I was very impressed but then found that the softness highlighted in the dpreview (www.dpreview.com) review!! was a problem if, as I sometimes do, I wanted to print an image bigger than 20x16. It is possible to print very large images, it just pushes the 'envelope' more than with the D1x - but, after all, you get what you pay for!! All this said, I have many portrait photographer friends who use the D100 as their main camera and are very happy with it. As far as I can remember, the dp review actually compares the D100 with the S2. Hope this helps.
