News that 9gb 16 write DVD writers have just been unleashed

Philip,

Not aware of that but, like you, I needed a DVD rewriter a couple of months
ago having moved up to RAW file capture and not wanting to spend all my time
feeding CDs into my machine to archive them.

Knowing little about which were the best models, I relied on the photo press
and went with their recommendation and bought a Plextor PX-708A.

This is mutli format so gets around the standard wars you rightly refer to;
writes at up to 8 speed on DVD+R media (if you can find disks that can
reliably take that sort of data hit) and is very reliable.

We are really pleased with its performance to date though have found that to
get the most reliable recording using cheaper disks (essential if archiving
a lot), we have to drop the write speed to 2x.

This is not as bad as it sounds, remember you need to multiply the DVD write
speed by 9 to get a comparable CD write speed. At 2x it takes about 7 mins
to write a Gb.

Hope this helps.
