DIGITAL SEASON
12 January 5 February 2004
To launch 2004, the AOP Gallery is hosting a month of exhibitions and
workshops covering all aspects of digital photography. As a rapidly
increasing number images are captured, viewed, and sent digitally around the
globe, digital photography has become an essential tool of modern
communication. Technological advances have had an enormous impact on the
face of the industry, and for those of you interested in the future of
photography we have lively debates where you can put across your views and
discuss current events with other practising photographers. The rapid
succession of new digital technology can also be a bewildering and daunting
experience for both professionals and amateurs alike. Come along and
participate!

Digital Photography, the Holy Grail or the Kings New Clothes?
Wednesday 14 January, 7-9pm
A debate on the present status of digital photography. Among topics
addressed will be the quality of digital imagery ( both fact and fiction ),
investment versus results , the learning curve, the implications of digital
file supply as opposed to transparency or print ,the new responsibilities of
the digital smudger, the response of commissioners to new technology and the
effects on the production workflow from image capture to press.
We will have a panel drawn from all the key parts of the industry to air
their views, and trust that there will be a lively response from the floor.
Camera Fair
Tuesday 20 January, 1-6pm
Come and see what the camera manufacturers have to offer. There is no need
to book in advance and a 5.00 admission charge will be charged on the door
(refreshments provided). See the latest range of digital cameras on sale and
compare the prices and specifications best suited to your needs. Questions
are welcomed, and manufacturers will be able to discuss options and ranges.
Hands on Cameras
Wednesday 21 January, 7-9pm
Photographers experienced in working with digital cameras will bring along
their camera equipment to demonstrate both their technical capabilities and
photographic specialities. They will also bring along prints to illustrate
the qualities of the images captured. Discover which camera is best suited
to obtain the results that you want and compare the advantages of different
models available. This is an unmissable opportunity to quiz digital
photographers and to debate the best and the worst of the digital kit
available to photographers.
Colour Management and Digital Workflow
Wednesday 28 January, 7-9pm
The AOP will address the often maligned subject of colour management and
digital file supply. This workshop will provide a thorough overview on
camera profiling, monitor profiling and proofing, etc. We will look at how
the increasing supply of images in a digital format is affecting production
workflow, and how this in turn brings new responsibilities to photographers.
The RGB vs. CMYK issue will also be addressed.
Possibly more importantly, we will be looking at the demands of the
commissioners and producers, particularly the new initiatives being
introduced by bodies such as the Periodical Publishers Association, the
Advertising Pre Press Association and the Digital Ad Lab. The new standards
being set will have serious implications on how photographers provide their
images in the future.
Images on the Web
Wednesday 4 February, 7-9pm
Simon Butcher, photographer & web designer, will introduce and demonstrate
the basic techniques of preparing images for the web. This will include an
introduction to placing photographs onto a web site as well as outlining the
basic practice of emailing images to clients. Learn about zSites and how to
utilise zSites in order to achieve great results. This discussion will cover
topics such as image resolution, picture size and compression details. In
addition, there will be indispensable advice on producing and manipulating
your digital images to get the most from them.
Careers Talk Special
Thursday 5 February, 3pm
Held during the AOPs digital month of events, the first careers talk of
2004 is kindly hosted by the London College of Printing. Graham Diprose and
Jeff Robins will discuss studying digital photography, how this relates to
gaining freelance or assistant work, and whether to print a folio from
Photoshop or in a darkroom. How might the industry continue to change in the
next few years and can you turn this to your advantage? You do not need to
book a place in advance just come along. Admission is free and all are
welcome.
