We are now experiencing recurrent problems losing the firewire connection in mid shoot with the software not able to find the camera
I cannot compare directly my experience with yours as am using a Mac system but I had a similar problem and found that by removing the card and shooting only to download that it was more stable. If you are using Firewire and bypassing the card, that card needs to have been actually formatted in the camera in which it is placed. Swapping cards between cameras seems to upset the firewire link.
There is certainly an issue with the actual firewire connection plug in the camera - it is pathetic and was a point of criticism on day 1 of purchase. I am not familiar with the cable you are using but the original type as supplied was a straight connector which stuck right out from the body and was very easy to dislodge. I know that there is now one which has a right angled connector plug which keeps it better aligned and Kodak in the US have produced some kind of wierd strapping to try and hold it more securely in place. The 14N does not like the physical connection being broken and from my experience even the slightest movement of the plug can do just this so try securing the plug really firmly.
I have done this in the following manner: I have stuck two pieces of "soft" velcro on the body on either side of the firewire socket and then when the cable is inserted I stretch a piece of "hooked" velcro over the plug.
Also ensure you are using Firmware v. 4.4.3. - there was certainly an issue with earlier versions. I don't suppose Kodak will mind me telling you that there is a beta version of the latest Windows upgrade out right now so things will be changing yet again in next few weeks.
